Obesity and Covid-19

Updated: Feb 19, 2021

In the news recently is now a known link to obesity and an increased risk of more serious cases of Covid-19. This may be due to the worn out cells damaged by excess fat (still to be confirmed fat cells) that increase production of proteins which the virus laches onto and feeds into the lungs and we now know that it is a link to add obesity to the vulnerable categories for Covid-19.

Obesity is a pro inflammatory state which means that involves the immune system which also effects your increased risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure stokes, cancer and heart attack.

If you have obesity for example (over 35% BMI) it is a fact that if you move more, increase your muscle mass not necessarily loosing weight you will be well on your way to reducing the risks. Muscle produces anti-inflammatory chemicals so doing that could help shift that balance in the immune system and help with your reaction to Covid-19 if infected.

There is an obesity epidemic in the UK currently 3/10 people are obese and more than 30% of their body weight is fat. We now know however, that 80-85% of obese development cases are now known to be part of your genes but ultimately you are responsible for what you put in your mouth, so over processed food being the main cause. It is scientifically proven that if you are eating more calories than you burn you will gain weight.

Practice social distancing and stay at home. If you are worried about this information the message is simple, become more mindful of healthy practices, its never too late.
